On a day on which I extended my Duolingo learning streak to 1946 days and on a day where I uploaded the following quote video:
…I can that I saw my first fencing match.
How was it? It was interesting. The bouts have scoreboards to accompany them.
Did you understand what was going on? Mostly, I understood how to score points but I, of course, didn’t get the strategy and tactics. And oftentimes when there was a scoring moment or exchange, I couldn’t determine who got the point. It dawned on me that a scoring thrust with the weapon was quickly done and not easy to spot while the defensive reaction which seemed, to my inexperienced eyes, to be a scoring thrust, was drawn out and too late.
What was going on before the scoring encounter? There was a lot of bobbing and weaving, and waving of the weapons before one of the fencers would lunge at the other and the other would react., unless both lunged at each other. There were elements of Sumo and Boxing involved.
Anything else to say about the fencing? Yes, but you can see it in my substack. If the weekend entry is not posted it will be. Or you can subscribe to my substack and be the first to know when it’s published.
