I learned of the book from Dave Collum’s 2022 Year in Review.
The Comanches were truly astonishing people but truly savage. Their demise was a tragedy. The Global Empire Americans had an admiration mixed with hatred for them. Their dealings with the Native Americans were not honest as well as being brutally savage in their own way.
Still many Americans at the end of the Indian wars had a fascination with the Indians. It explains why they started the practice of nicknaming sports teams after them — a practice that it would be foolish to discontinue.
